Learning Objectives

 

 

Although the primary mission of this course will be to provide the best possible educational content in pain mechanisms for KI and UM graduate students, professional health care providers an equally important outcome of this course will be exposure of UM to KI faculty and vice versa; this exposure in turn should foster collaborative relationships between the two faculties as it has in the past.

  • Distinguish between classes of peripheral neurons, identify how neurobiological changes in the nervous system result in chronic pain, and describe the role of neuroimmune responses in the transition to chronic pain
  • Identify mechanistic signatures of various manifestations of pain arising from the trigeminal system
  • Distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of available methods for establishing pain level in patients.
  • Identify the location, expression patterns, mechanisms, anticipated efficacy and side effects of both established and newly emerging analgesic targets.
  • Evaluate impact of restrictive opioid policies on curtailing substance abuse and on patient satisfaction
